StART 2019 Sister Cities Mural Celebration at 20 Charles Street East (Car Park 1) September 15 at 12pm September 13, 2019

Toronto Parking Authority partners with a group called StreetARToronto (StART), which is a part of the City of Toronto’s Transportation Services division. The initiative started in 2012 with the creation of the City’s Graffiti Management Plan, which aims to reduce vandalism, but encourages street art that creates vibrant imagery for the community to enjoy, while supporting local artistic talent.

TPA and StART began their partnership in 2014 and have worked to produce mural projects located at adjacent walls at off-street parking facilities, and one adjacent to a Bike Share Toronto station. TPA has a multi-year plan to incorporate more environmentally responsible features to its parking facilities, as outlined in the City’s Design Guidelines for ‘Greening’ Surface Parking Lots, which public art is a recommended design feature.

While StART encourages artwork by local artists, the group also participates in international exchange programs and partnerships with other cities. StART has partnered with the Goethe-Institut, to have German Artist Justus Becker develop a mural in the City of Toronto. The mural is meant to celebrate Toronto and the City of Frankfurt, Germany’s 30 year partnership-City relationship.

Please join Artist Justus Becker and the project partners in unveiling the mural at noon on September 15, 2019 at Car Park 1- 20 Charles St. E. The mural will be on the exterior of the south-west stairwell.
